Cover Letter

COVER LETTER:  FAQS

What is the purpose of a cover letter?

Your cover letter is part of your tool kit to effectively Fast Track your career.

 It serves two main purposes:

  1. To introduce yourself to the employer
  2. To highlight your skills and match to the role and the organisation

Employers are inundated with applications from candidates and you have 10-30 seconds to capture their attention and stand out from the crowd. You need to ensure that you submit a complete package including resume and cover letter to showcase the skills you have to match what the employer wants.

Do I need a cover letter if the employer has not requested one?

YES! Although employers primarily use resumes to eliminate candidates from the candidate pool, they also rely on your cover letter to get a complete picture.

When short listing, employers will review your application to establish that you have the requisite skills, experience and attributes mentioned in the position description.  Once they establish you meet these criterion they will then be interested in your individual interest in the role and organisation.

At the interview stage, your cover letter is subsequently employed to provide detailed information in relation not only to your skills, knowledge and accomplishments but also why you are a good ‘cultural fit’ to the organisation.

If you fail to include a cover letter with your application and rely on the employer to use their crystal ball as to why you want to join the company, you’re not short listed for an interview – it’s that simple.

What is the difference between a cover letter and a marketing Letter?

The primary differences between a cover letter and marketing letter are:

  • A Cover letter is in response to an advertised position
  • A Marketing Letter is targeting employers in the field you would like work, which may not be currently recruiting.

Either way you still need to explain your interest in the role / organisation along with what you can offer the employer.

Why should I pay to have my cover letter professionally written?

We are the experts in skills identification.

We know the skills that employers are looking for and how to showcase these so that they compliment your resume / C.V, in the most positive light in order to grab the attention of the employer.

We do not advocate using slick graphic design features or gimmicks – rather, we invest in the most important component of the cover letter – YOU and your fit for the role.
